The independent co-educational school was one of three UK schools represented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The 18 Lower Sixth students who are all considering future careers in science heard from leading practitioners in medical, scientific, technological and environmental research.

The lectures on subjects with a global context included 'The Power of Ideas' presented by Mike Lazaridis, who was responsible for the launch of the BlackBerry smartphone.

Pupils were able to pursue a programme to suit their interests from subjects ranging from genomics and cancer to carbon dioxide capture and storage, and from the interface between biology and chemistry to the latest discoveries in particle physics.

The week-long scientific enrichment exercise, led by Solihull School's Head of Science Andrew Jones and Chemist Sarah Smith, also included a visit to Vancouver Museum of Anthropology to learn more about first nation (aboriginal) peoples.

Pupils also took time out to enjoy the snow on Grouse Mountain and an ice hockey match.

The annual AAAS conference has become an established part of Solihull School's extra-curricular activities, with a record number of students attending this year.

The School has been to meetings in Washington DC, San Diego and Chicago over the past three years and plans to attend the next one in Boston.
