Kind-hearted pupils at Solihull have raised almost £9,000 to help impoverished children in Africa.

The money was raised during the annual charity week at Solihull Junior School and will be used to help buy a much-needed new minibus for the La Future Leaders (LFL) community school, which is a charitable organisation in Ghana.

Deputy Head of the Junior School, Michael Jones, said: “The children arranged a series of events which really put the fun into fundraising.

“They held a talent show, a movie afternoon, a book sale, staged a tuck shop takeover and organised a photo booth, along with a staff versus monitors football match.

“It was fantastic fun and raised a terrific amount in aid of a very worthwhile cause, as we’ve agreed to help to fund a replacement minibus for the children at the LFL school.”

The school is based just outside Ghana’s capital city, Accra, and offers education and support to around 350 young children who are living in poverty.

Claire Dignon, Head of Community relations at Solihull said: “We know the charity very well as some staff and students have had the opportunity to volunteer there and the charity’s trustees are based in Birmingham.”

“Without LFL, these Ghanaian children would never normally receive an education because they live in such poverty so it is a truly inspirational project.”

“It’s our hope that school's link with them will continue to develop and that more of our students will be encouraged to volunteer and engage with them.”
