Two of our Prep School children have reunited a former pupil with his school cap – almost 45 years after he last wore it!
Joseph and Jessie were given the Solihull cap by their Grandmother, Nora Bastock who received the school uniform item in a box of curios at her antique shop, London House Past and Presents, in Shipston on Stour.
Mrs Bastock said: “A customer noticed the Solihull School cap in one of our displays and mentioned it to me as they knew my grandchildren had recently joined the Prep School. On further inspection we realised it was a Jago House cap and we found a name written inside, Alun Rees. I got in touch with my grandchildren and they took the cap and a letter in to the Head of the Prep School, Mr Penney.”
On hearing this wonderful tale, Mr Penney was keen to return the cap to Mr Rees and set the school Archivist off on a history hunt. The Development & Alumni Relations Office undertook some additional research, discovered more about Mr Rees and tracked him down to Aberdeen. A telephone conversation later and the cap was packaged and posted!
Old Silhillian Mr Rees who attended Solihull from 1969 to 1976 said: “I have fond memories of school and am delighted to have my Jago cap back. I do remember, there were dire consequences if you went to school without it! It’s so lovely that Joseph and Jessie went to so much trouble, I’ve written a letter to thank them.”
