Solihull School

Pastoral

As a school, nurturing the wellbeing of the children is every bit as important to us as cultivating all the other wonderful things that they are capable of achieving. Every child’s Form Tutor is very much at the heart of our pastoral provision. Our small class sizes help them to really get to know what makes each child ‘tick’ and enables the Form Tutor to do their utmost to maximise pupils’ emotional readiness for learning.

Beyond this, further support is available for children from their teaching assistants in Alice House and the Heads of Year in Junior School. They will work with a range of subject teachers who very much have their personal development as well as their academic progression in mind. At lunchtime, children are supported by our experienced lunchtime supervisor team. Those who make use of our popular before and after school Wraparound care also benefit from a team of highly enthusiastic colleagues who are committed to providing the best care possible.

In addition, we have a nursing team and a counselling team available to support children and their families, whenever necessary. We have many colleagues who have undergone extensive training to teach the children acclaimed and accredited courses in mindfulness and resilience, and some staff are Mental Health Youth First Aid trained.

At Solihull, we pride ourselves in ensuring pupils’ pastoral development is addressed at every opportunity; not just in our wellbeing and personal development curriculum but throughout the school week. This could be in an assembly, during a form period or out on the sports field. Every day is filled with opportunities to take risks, bounce back and learn from mistakes so that pupils (and colleagues) can continue to grow and flourish into well-rounded individuals.
