Sport

Sport, Health and Fitness play a very important part within the life of the Preparatory School. We encourage pupils to develop a positive attitude towards all physical activity and exercise. Our pupils rise to the challenges of all sports, both team and individual, developing a healthy approach to competition and fair play, and participating enthusiastically.

Our ethos is simple but central to developing a passion for sport; pupils should experience a wide range of sporting activities to find an activity they can continue with beyond their school days. Our approach aims to use sport not only to develop the physical potential of the pupils but to also promote their mental health and wellbeing.

Our pupils benefit from the excellent facilities on the Saint Martin’s campus which include ample playing fields, a full-sized floodlit artificial pitch, a dance studio, three netball courts, a gymnasium and a 25m swimming pool.

Sport is taught from Nursery to J4 by a dedicated team of specialist teachers and coaches, each with their fields of expertise. In Alice House, pupils participate in a variety of activities with a focus on fundamental movement skills, enjoyment and participation. On ‘Tracksuit Friday’ all of our I1 and I2 pupils complete a full morning of activities, which includes PE, swimming and team games. Our youngest pupils in EYFS all have a weekly timetabled swimming and PE lesson. Junior School pupils participate in a PE lesson, swimming lesson and games lessons each week.

Outside of curriculum time, there is a wide range of co-curricular clubs and activities which take place before and after school, and at lunchtimes. These do not focus exclusively on team sports and include cross country, gymnastics, aerobics, strength training and many more. We pride ourselves on our regional and national successes but also our ‘sport for all approach. Our house system also enables every child to compete in inter-house sports competitions.  We celebrate the achievements of our most talented pupils, the active participation of all team members and encourage all our children to engage in physical activity at an appropriate level.

We aim to instil in all our pupils the overriding goal of lifelong participation in physical activity, and the understanding of a healthy lifestyle, as they travel through the Prep School and continue their journey into Senior School.

"Throughout the school, pupils enjoy all aspects of their work and achieve very high levels of success in sporting and academic competitions."

(I.S.I.)

There are many opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities, both within and beyond the school day. Fixtures and other competitive events are arranged with other schools throughout the year. Pupils regularly compete at local, district, regional and national levels in a variety of sports, both individually and as part of a school team. The Prep School has a strong tradition of success in a wide range of sports over recent years. We celebrate the achievements of our most talented pupils, the active participation of all team members and encourage all our children to engage in physical activity at an appropriate level.
