Facilities

The department teaches in three specialised laboratories within the Science Block as well as sharing two combined science laboratories. All laboratories are well equipped with interactive white boards and audio visual facilities, video microscopes, spirometers. There is also a departmental greenhouse, a large preparatory room with two full time laboratory technicians and an experimental work area.

Curriculum

GCSE

We follow the AQA Biology specification. All pupils take Higher Tier examinations.

Sixth Form

We follow the OCR Biology syllabus. Topics include: cell ultrastructure, biochemistry, health and disease, microbiology, biotechnology, evolution, respiration and photosynthesis.

Co-curricular Activities

Stretch & Challenge

Our Medics, Dentists and Veterinary Society is popular and well attended by those with a desire to study Medicine or Dentistry in the future.

Trips & Visits

GCSE pupils visit the Natural History Museum or Science Museum as well as attending the annual GCSE: Science Live conference. Sixth Form students attend lectures at local universities to widen their experience and also complete a five day residential field trip to Betws-y-Coed. There is also the opportunity to participate in the American Annual Advancement of Science Conference held in America (and/or Canada).

Destinations

In recent years, students have gone on to read a variety of Biology related course at a wide range of universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Exeter, Manchester, Sheffield, and Bristol.  Students have chosen to read degrees such as Natural Sciences, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Microbiology, and Genetics to name but a few.  In a typical year over 65% of A level Biologists will continue on to Higher Education to read a Biology-related degree at university.
